Fostering collective responses to complex issues

About us

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, he toa takitini Our strength is not as individuals, but as a collective The Leadership Lab team is a vibrant and diverse mix of people bringing experience, knowledge and a real passion to life and leading. We operate as a collective with a wide range of individuals teaming up to contribute to a range of projects while also supporting and developing each other in the process. Our Leadership Lab team covers all of New Zealand/Aotearoa and through the extensive network of robust and trusting relationships where we form partnerships with local leaders. We believe that the scale and complexity of the issues that many organisations and communities face are beyond the scope of the leadership approaches that have served us well in the past. However, collectively leaders have the vision, will and resources to co-create new approaches to address these most complex and challenging issues. Leadership Lab’s purpose is to support the emergence of flourishing organisations and communities. Our unique bi-cultural heritage provides a rich resource of wisdom and insight that informs the practice of collective leadership. As an organisation that has its home in Aotearoa, we acknowledge and draw from that wisdom. Respecting and valuing the unique cultural identity of each person and community allows us all to contribute our gifts and thrive together The Leadership Lab team works and thinks in a connected, systemic and long-term way. We document personal stories and share practical ideas about collective leadership to support and inspire.

Investing in Our People: A Deeper Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi At Whangaparāoa College, we're committed to providing our learners with the best possible education, and that includes ensuring all our staff have a deep and nuanced understanding of New Zealand's history. Recently, our staff participated in a dedicated professional development day focused on Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi). These staff-only days are invaluable opportunities for our educators to "deep dive" into critical topics that directly impact student learning. A strong understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi's history and principles is essential for creating an inclusive and informed learning environment. We were fortunate to have Dr. Judy Bruce, Kim Rogers, and Gwyn John from Leadership Lab NZ facilitate this important session. They provided a comprehensive historical overview of the treaty's formation, drawing from diverse and well-researched perspectives. The day explored how the treaty has shaped our past and its potential to guide our future. At times, the learning was confronting, challenging some of our existing beliefs and understandings. However, our staff found the information very valuable. They left with a renewed commitment to ensuring our learners receive accurate knowledge and a stronger understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We are now focused on finding ways to honour the treaty in our teaching practices and create a more equitable learning environment for all students. By investing in our teachers' professional development, we directly invest in the quality of education your children receive. We are dedicated to fostering a learning environment that respects and reflects the unique history and culture of Aotearoa, New Zealand. #TeTiritiOWaitangi #TreatyOfWaitangi #TreatyEducation #UnderstandingTeTiriti #Aotearoa #NZHistory #TangataWhenua #LearnTogether #KnowYourHistory #NZConversation

  • Plains Media have been a fantastic collaborator over the last couple of years as they have worked our team to develop the Rourou Conversations podcast, in-depth conversations, kōrero, that highlight inequity, amplify marginalised voices for advocacy and provoke system change. The Community Access Media Alliance (CAMA) is urging the Coalition Government to ensure that the proposed media reforms do not undermine the vital role of Community Access Media in Aotearoa. Over the last 3 years, it's been amazing to work alongside Plains Media to produce multiple series of the Rourou Conversations show / podcast, including Becoming Tangata Tiriti, The Future of Feminism?, Gender Health Justice, Digital Divide and Conscious Catalysts. Check out the full series here: https://lnkd.in/gfGSkYfn From Plains Media: We are part of the 12-station Community Access Media Alliance. CAMA's press release explains why this is a crucial time in our history as government starts reforming the media landscape. Plains Media is celebrating 37 years of radio and podcast delivery, training, community development and award-winning programming with pride, knowing the work we do in our region has deep impact. We celebrate all our content makers, past and present who have put their hearts and souls into the unique community media they create. From CAMA's release: “We amplify voices often unheard in mainstream media, broadcasting in over 50 languages and ensuring access to locally relevant information, education, and cultural content. The proposed reforms must not sideline the platforms that serve underrepresented communities.” The Community Access Media Alliance (CAMA) is urging the Coalition Government to ensure that the proposed media reforms do not undermine the vital role of Community Access Media in Aotearoa. https://lnkd.in/gDnu9Buw

At Leadership Lab NZ it’s been exciting co-designing this important kaupapa “Enhancing Leadership Series” alongside Belinda Himiona Kaye Maree Dunn and Clare Docherty for Social Service Providers Aotearoa coming up in May and June this year #collectiveimpact #equityandinclusion

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural Enhancing Leadership series, Te Pai Ora SSPA is thrilled to announce we're bringing this incredible opportunity back! 🎉 Last year, leaders were inspired by our Kaitiaki, deepened their whanaungatanga within the community-based social service sector, and gained valuable insights to take back to their organisations. This year, our Enhancing Leadership workshop series features a unique line-up of respected Kaitiaki leaders, including the return of Kaye Maree Dunn and Chris Jansen from Whakamanawa 2024. These sessions will blend presentations, frameworks, and philosophies with peer-to-peer discussions and real-world workshopping for an interactive, hands-on experience. The series kicks off and ends with a whanaungatanga session, creating space for collective leadership and a lasting community of practice. Close to a fortnight ago, our incredible rangatahi in Leadership Lab NZ Puāwai programme hosted the Puāwai Showcase: Window to my World. They poured their hearts into creating photo boards, performing powerful spoken word poems, and participating in a podcast panel where they discussed topics they're passionate about. We are so proud of our rangatahi for the hard work, creativity, and courage they showed in sharing a window to their world - their lived experiences, their stories, their passions, and life as rangatahi in Ōtautahi. It was amazing to see the turnout from supportive friends, whānau, and community members who came to celebrate their voices and creativity. Check out some photos from the night below! 📸 And don’t miss the podcast episodes dropping every Wednesday at 5 pm weekly: https://lnkd.in/gKaDsC-Y 🎧 Photos by Erica Austin #Puāwai #YouthVoices #Rangatahi #Creativity #Community #Ōtautahi #Podcast #RangatahiLeadership Wikitoria Kurene Rochelle Faimalo Chris Jansen Mahlon Saumalu

  • For our last Pānui, Chris Jansen wrote about growing culturally sustaining leadership and Leadership Lab's contribution and future offerings to continue to support this. Chris' piece is now published on our website: https://lnkd.in/g9YEUPwr "In a recent LinkedIn post; Jehan Casinader (ex journalist and Mental Health advocate) asked the question “What does your business actually stand for?” and observed that; “Many firms are rolling back mental health, sustainability, diversity and inclusion initiatives. We’re seeing it around the world – and in some NZ businesses too. Many businesses tell good stories about how they’re leading social change, caring for their people, and looking after the planet. But those stories only have impact – if we live them out.” A well-timed challenge and one we responded to by posting and unpacking how Leadership Lab is serious when we say we only do work that creates a more Equitable Aotearoa and we’re not concerned in the slightest about bogus criticism of being too ‘woke’. We are disgusted by some of the policies being announced by international politicians especially over the last 2 weeks and also concerned about the regression in Aotearoa around issues of inclusion and equity that many of us have been working on for decades."

  • Over the last fortnight, 3 of our Leadership Lab NZ consultants have worked in Singapore. Lyn Jansen has facilitated two workshops with school leaders around the topic of "Responding effectively to peer-to-peer sexualised behaviour in the school context". Greg Jansen and Chris Jansen have co-facilitated workshops for the Singapore International Schools Leadership Programme that we have been offering for 11 years - this was the second workshop of three and based at North London Collegiate School this time. Last weekend, they also presented at the FOBISIA Middle leadership conference based at Dulwich College (Singapore). Finally, Chris Jansen has also spent four days facilitating workshops with various leadership teams at United World College Singapore. Such a superbly rewarding experience working alongside these passionate leaders in highly innovative schools over many years :) Dan Brown Seema Desai Ellie Alchin Rebecca Smith Michael Iannini Brian O'Maoileoin
